Achieng Owira - Suko Wich (Braiding Hair)

It is the last Sunday of the month and that can only mean one thing - it's time for all of us women in the family to gather at the back of the house and braid each others hair. 

This is when we catch up on the latest news about aunty Peninah and her wealthy husband. On his last trip he brought her back so many gifts she had to distribute some to her neighbours. Imagine! My sister Rehema then fills us in on how her job hunting is going. She has left every job she ever had because the bosses are too demanding and she doesn't like stress. We question her and ask if she's really just lazy and cant take the pressure of a real job. Mamas back pain has gotten better since she started taking the mwarubaini (Neem tree juice) that grandma recommended. In the meantime Annie, our eldest cousin, is still praying that Nyasaye (God) will bless her with a child before her husband finds himself a wife who can. 

I soak in all the stories with amusement and wonder. In this moment we are all connected by our service to each other and the love we share despite our different experiences. How glorious! It’s my favourite day of the month and I hope we can do this for a lifetime.
